State of the Hearables Industry
audioXpress|April 2023
From April 2022 to April 2023, true wireless earbuds and all the efforts to create product concepts in the hearables class have evolved dramatically. That’s why this year’s article focuses on projecting the evolution and the new possibilities.

State of the Hearables Industry

The true wireless stereo (TWS) product category is currently one of the hottest trends in consumer technology. It’s also one of the most important product segments in growth and revenue and that happened faster than anyone involved expected, even though the product itself and its use cases are still evolving.

True wireless currently applies to both standard consumer TWS earbuds and hearing aids, with the two very distinct markets benefiting from common technologies that support independent wireless links to each ear-device. That breakaway from wires is fundamentally what proved critical for consumer adoption and it’s been a technical challenge that in large part explains why some products have done much better than others. But let’s not jump ahead.

In our own reports and contributed articles, audioXpress has illustrated that very intense and fast evolution, revealing how from solving technical challenges to a relatively simple use case, the audio industry has been transitioning to a completely new class of audio and voice applications and technologies.

Hovering above both the consumer-oriented TWS earbuds and medical hearing aids is now a completely new class of truly wireless devices with embedded intelligence, which we can easily predict could quickly expand to a complete ecosystem of wearables.

We are currently witnessing the quick evolution of crossover products that provide hearing assistance and are sold over the counter, while in the less-regulated consumer technology space we are seeing the rise of hearables and augmented hearing.
