Samsung The Premiere 5

A compact ultra-short-throw projector that isn't as showstopping as its name suggests
-
Samsung's The Premiere series has played a key role in popularising ultra short-throw projectors. These all-in-one solutions can achieve a huge cinematic picture and sound experience from relatively compact form factors.
The Premiere 5 packs Samsung's Tizen operating system and a unique touchscreen interface mode into a super-compact chassis designed to be picked up and moved around the house. It’s a unique proposition for sure, and the fun factor is definitely there; it’s just a shame that it doesn't really shine - especially considering its hefty price tag.
Let's start with a positive. The Premiere 5 is a neat-looking unit, and it feels premium in the hand, too. Its top-mounted lens can project an image up to 100in when placed just 43.3cm from the wall.
Taking a stand
But let's forget about walls for a moment, as this projector's party trick allows it to beam onto a table, worktop or floor with ease (should you want that). Snapping the included Touch Stand into place allows you to project on a new axis and access the touch interface, although the latter is temperamental and seems to work only on certain surfaces.

Ask us to talk about some of our favourite high-end phono stages of all time, and it wouldn't be long before Luxman's excellent valve-based EQ-500 is mentioned. What Hi-Fi? tested this immaculately engineered unit back in 2017, and it made such an impression that we used it in our reference system for a while.
