Aerospace company United Launch Alliance has teamed with Amazon to schedule the initial Project Kuiper launch, a satellite internet network aimed at competing with SpaceX’s Starlink, set for a three-hour window opening at noon Eastern time from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

UNITED LAUNCH ALLIANCE AND AMAZON SCHEDULE FIRST PROJECT KUIPER LAUNCH TO RIVAL SPACEX STARLINK

The launch provider will deploy 27 satellites using an Atlas V rocket, kicking off Amazon’s effort to place 3,232 satellites in low Earth orbit. For satellite internet providers, consumers, and industry analysts, this mission marks Amazon’s debut in a competitive broadband-from-space market.

Project Kuiper targets global high-speed internet delivery, challenging Starlink’s network of nearly 6,500 satellites serving over 5 million customers worldwide.

ULA’s Atlas V, built at its Decatur, Alabama facility, will lift off from Space Launch Complex 41, starting Amazon’s multi-launch plan with various providers. This mission, named KA-01 or Kuiper Atlas 1, initiates a series of launches to meet federal deadlines.

Amazon has contracted additional launches with Blue Origin, Arianespace, and SpaceX, diversifying its strategy to orbit half its constellation by mid-2026, as required by the Federal Communications Commission. The company’s $10 billion investment drives this project, seeking to provide broadband to underserved areas with ULA’s proven launch reliability.

United Launch Alliance will use an Atlas V rocket to send 27 Project Kuiper satellites into low Earth orbit during a three-hour window from Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex 41. The rocket, 191 feet tall in its 551 configuration, supports the payload needs of Amazon’s first batch, marking ULA’s debut Kuiper mission. Amazon engineered these satellites to operate at altitudes between 590 and 630 kilometers, above typical low-orbit ranges.
