Tesla has confirmed that its lithium refinery in Texas is now operational, marking the company's first facility of its kind dedicated to refining battery-grade lithium in the United States.

TESLA OPENS LITHIUM REFINERY IN TEXAS TO EXPAND U.S.BATTERY SUPPLY

The project is intended to support Tesla's battery production plans while reducing dependence on overseas processing of critical minerals.

The company shared details of the facility through a video posted on its official North America account on X, describing the refinery as a step toward regionalizing access to battery materials. Tesla has said the project is designed to create local jobs, lower emissions tied to long-distance transport, and strengthen domestic supply chains for electric vehicle production.

Lithium is a core component in most modern electric vehicle batteries, and while the United States has lithium resources, much of the global refining capacity remains concentrated outside North America. Tesla's Texas facility is intended to address that imbalance by processing raw lithium into battery-grade material closer to where vehicles and energy storage systems are manufactured.

Tesla has previously said that refining lithium domestically could shorten supply chains and provide greater predictability in material availability. The refinery is expected to support both vehicle batteries and stationary energy storage products as the company continues to expand production across multiple sites.
