Indeed, Nissan has had the rather good idea of bringing its tired old Micra format back to life using the same all-electric platform as the fabulous new Renault 5.

This is a Micra? Whatever will my grandparents think?

It's designed to be affordable and fun, with a new shape to help shrug off its old image as arunabout for pensioners and broke students.

But does the world need another supermini?

Why not? Small electric cars are the way forward when it comes to getting around city streets efficiently. The new Micra is light but still comes armed with a 52kWh battery pack driving a fizzy 152bhp electric motor. It should get to 62mph in 8secs.

Is it practical, then?
