DAGGERFALL UNITY
PC Gamer US Edition
|October 2025
The definitive way to journey through the boldest version of Tamriel.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is all the rage right now, and that makes sense. Oblivion is the first blockbuster take on Tamriel, rife with celebrity cameos, handcrafted world-spanning quest lines and streamlined buildcrafting (for 2006, anyway). I love Oblivion, and I played it long before I ever tried Daggerfall, a game that barely functioned on my PC by the time I'd taken an interest. Crusty as it might look in 2025, though, Daggerfall still stands tall as one of the wildest and most absorbing simulation RPGs in the genre. Fans like mod author Interkarma couldn't let it fade into obscurity; so mods came to the rescue.
Enter Daggerfall Unity. It's a meticulous open-source recreation of the second Elder Scrolls game in the Unity engine. It's the original game note for note, but with more intuitive controls, touched-up visuals, mod support, and draw distances that show off just how gargantuan the game is.
SECOND LIFEIf you're not sure if Daggerfall is for you, consider this: have you ever wanted to speak to a dragon in an Elder Scrolls game? I'm not talking about the Thu'um: in Daggerfall, you can speak Dragonish for a chance that dragon enemies will understand you and not attack you. You can also buy a personal boat, get a bank loan that scales with your level and reputation, and adjust your conversational etiquette to talk down your nose at whoever you like. Moreso than any other Elder Scrolls game, Daggerfall is a through-and-through fantasy life simulator. Unity is just the best way to play it.
