1. Kumis (Country: Mongolia)
Kumis is a traditional fermented dairy drink made from mare's milk. Popular in Mongolia and Central Asia, this slightly alcoholic beverage has a tart, tangy flavour and a thin, frothy texture. Due to the natural sugar content in horse milk, fermentation produces a mild alcohol content. It is rich in probiotics, proteins, vitamins B and C, and minerals like calcium and phosphorus. It is known to support digestion, strengthen the immune system, and promotes gut health.
2. Chicha de Jora (Country: Peru)
Chicha de Jora is a corn-based fermented drink that traces its origins back to the Inca civilization. Made by fermenting maize, this golden-hued beverage has a mildly sour and slightly alcoholic taste. Traditionally, the fermentation process involved chewing the corn and spitting it into a container to activate natural enzymes, though modern methods avoid this practice. It is high in carbohydrates, fibre content, and antioxidants. It is reported to aid in digestion, provides quick energy, and may have anti-inflammatory properties.
