With over 75 years of experience, Karl Schnell GmbH & Co. KG has become a trusted name in the global food processing machinery industry. In this exclusive interview with Food & Beverages Processing Magazine, Bernd Mehlau, Marketing Manager at KARL SCHNELL, talks about the company’s journey from its beginnings in Winterbach, Germany, to becoming a global provider of advanced solutions for meat, processed cheese, and delicatessen producers. He shares how the company’s focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability is helping it grow in new markets like India and support food manufacturers with efficient, customized, and future-ready systems.

Engineering Excellence in Food Processing: KARL SCHNELL's Journey of Innovation, Quality, and Global Growth

Since its founding in 1948 by Swabian engineer and inventor Karl Schnell in Winterbach near Stuttgart, KARL SCHNELL has been synonymous with German engineering excellence, innovation, and uncompromising quality. Our company began with the invention of the “Muser” — a fine mincer that quickly became a standard in food processing - and we have since developed a complete range of machines and integrated systems for the food industry.

Over the decades, KS has continually expanded our technological leadership, from introducing automated sausage and pâté production lines in the 1960s, UHT sterilizing systems for processed cheese applications to today's all-in-one systems that combine grinding, mixing, and emulsifying in a single process.

Still family-owned and now in its third generation, our company employs around 350 people in three plants in Germany, our subsidiaries in Europe and the USA, and delivers end-to-end processing solutions from raw material intake to final portioning.

Global growth has always been a strategic focus. KS systems are used in thousands of installations worldwide, serving both small manufacturers and international corporations. Emerging markets like India play an increasingly important role in our global expansion.

What defines KS at its core is a commitment to innovation, technical expertise, and a long-term vision – values that have shaped our company for over seven decades and continue to drive us into the future.

KARL SCHNELL is known for delivering complete, application-driven solutions. Could you highlight your key product offerings and how they cater to the specific needs of meat, processed cheese, and delicatessen producers?

How Hygienic & Sanitary Design Powers Efficiency on the Line

It starts with something small. A single droplet of water left to pool inside a crevice. A crack too fine for the naked eye, but just wide enough to trap organic residue. One cleaning step skipped in a rush to get back online. Then come the consequences: a contamination alert. A product recall. A line shutdown. And suddenly, what looked like a minor design oversight becomes a multi-million-pound mistake.
