INDIA LIGHTS UP
EPR Magazine (Electrical & Power Review)
|November 2025
A nation that once struggled for energy has reached a stage where a balanced flow of electricity is available at every nook and corner of the country. One must be surprised!
-
The nation, India, has achieved a historic milestone with an installed power capacity of 476 GW as of June 2025, marking a near selfsufficient power ecosystem with a minimal shortfall of just 0.1%. Peak electricity demand has touched a record 250 GW, reflecting the rapid industrial and economic growth.
Thermal power remains dominant at 240 GW (50.52%), non-fossil fuel sources have risen remarkably to 235.7 GW (49%), including 226.9 GW from renewables and 8.8 GW from nuclear energy.
This milestone has now been achieved, not suddenly, but silently.
The nation has strived hard for many years, with recent years seeing a marked improvement.
This is the story of supply and demand, in which India is advancing in energy. And believe it: this is just the beginning of becoming the world's power hub.
Modernisation reforms
Recently, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) unveiled its draft regulations for modernising power infrastructure, focusing on both the physical and digital domains. This has been a major development for the power sector, facilitating open access and paving the way for private parties. The energy experts believe that, while the reforms are long overdue, their successful implementation could redefine how power is transmitted, traded, and consumed nationwide. Though this is just a draft and the industry has to wait and watch, it is also seen as a move toward customer-centric reforms.
