Elon Musk announced XChat, a revamped direct messaging system for X. The feature, now in beta for select paid subscribers, introduces end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, file sharing, and audio and video calls. Musk shared the news in a post on X, describing XChat as built on Rust, a programming language known for speed and security, with a fresh architecture designed to enhance privacy and functionality. Unlike X's earlier messaging, which allowed only media files and offered limited encryption for paid users since May 2023, XChat expands the scope. Users can send any file type, from documents to code, and make calls without needing a phone number. The system is secured with a four-digit passcode, adding an extra layer of protection. The beta rollout targets X Premium subscribers, with a wider release planned soon, provided no scaling issues arise.

This isn't a standalone app but an integrated feature within X, replacing the platform's outdated direct messaging. The timing follows X's pause on its previous encrypted DMs, suggesting a complete overhaul to address user privacy concerns and compete with apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

The shift responds to growing demand for secure communication, especially as X aims to become a central hub for digital interactions.
