TESLA'S ROBOTAXI GEOFENCE EXPANSION ENTERS “PLAID MODE” — AND COMES WITH AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE

Tesla's long-promised robotaxi service is taking a dramatic leap forward.

TESLA'S ROBOTAXI GEOFENCE EXPANSION ENTERS “PLAID MODE” — AND COMES WITH AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE

The company has begun a major expansion of its robotaxi geofences, the virtual boundaries that define where autonomous Teslas can operate without driver intervention. Elon Musk, never one to underplay his announcements, described the expansion as entering “Plaid Mode”—a nod to Tesla’s highest-performance mode in its cars—signaling that the rollout is accelerating far faster than many anticipated.

The bigger shock? Sources close to Tesla say the expansion includes a surprise capability: robotaxis are now being trained to operate seamlessly across multiple geofenced regions, effectively stitching together local networks into broader autonomous corridors. This could mark the beginning of Tesla’s long-stated goal to create a nationwide—and eventually global—driverless ride-hailing network.

imageFROM LOCAL TESTING TO WIDER DEPLOYMENTS

Until now, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) robotaxi efforts have been confined to highly controlled geofenced areas, mostly in parts of California, Texas, and Nevada. These zones allowed Tesla to stress-test its autonomous stack in environments with heavy regulatory oversight and predictable conditions.

With the new expansion, Tesla is opening up robotaxi operations in additional urban corridors, suburbs, and select highways, significantly increasing both the footprint and the complexity of its deployments. Cities reportedly included in this new phase are Phoenix, Austin, Las Vegas, and parts of Florida. Early users in these regions will be able to hail robotaxis through the Tesla app in beta mode, with limited capacity as Tesla monitors performance.
