MICROSOFT ACCELERATES QUANTUM-SAFE SECURITY PLAN AS ENCRYPTION RISKS GROW

Microsoft is accelerating its quantum-safe security roadmap as governments and technology companies prepare for a future in which quantum computers could break widely used encryption systems.

The move reflects a growing concern across the cybersecurity industry: even before powerful quantum machines exist, attackers may already be collecting encrypted data today with the intention of decrypting it later. That threat, often described as “harvest now, decrypt later,” has pushed major companies to begin upgrading cryptographic systems years before the risk becomes practical at scale.

WHY QUANTUM-SAFE SECURITY MATTERS NOW

Most modern digital security depends on encryption methods that protect online banking, messaging, cloud storage, enterprise networks, software updates, and government systems. These methods are extremely difficult for classical computers to break, but future quantum computers could undermine several of the algorithms currently used to secure the internet.

That does not mean every password or message is immediately at risk. Large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking modern encryption are not yet available. The concern is long-term exposure.

Sensitive data with lasting value—medical records, financial information, government files, intellectual property, and defense communications—may need to remain secure for decades. If that information is stolen today and stored, it could become vulnerable once quantum computing advances far enough.
