Apple's expanding U.S. manufacturing footprint gained another boost as GlobalWafers Co. began production at its new $4 billion silicon wafer facility in Sherman, Texas.

The plant marks one of the most significant domestic semiconductor materials investments in recent years and strengthens the supply chain behind advanced chips used in Apple devices.

The Sherman project has been years in the making, first announced as part of a broader push to localize critical semiconductor materials. The facility is expected to produce 300mm silicon wafers, the industry standard for advanced logic and memory chips used in Al accelerators, mobile processors, and high-performance computing components. These wafers form the literal foundation of modern electronics, serving as the substrate upon which billions of transistors are etched.

Unlike chip fabrication plants that assemble finished semiconductors, wafer manufacturing sits at an earlier and equally critical stage of the process. The purity, flatness, and crystalline perfection of silicon wafers directly affect yield rates, performance consistency, and long-term reliability. For companies like Apple that rely on cutting-edge custom silicon, upstream materials stability is not optional — it is structural.

Texas has quietly become one of the most important semiconductor corridors in the United States. The Sherman facility adds to that ecosystem, complementing chip fabrication investments elsewhere in the state and anchoring a domestic supply chain that begins with raw silicon and extends to finished consumer products.
