AMAZON TURNS TO AI TO SPEED UP TV AND FILM PRODUCTION

Amazon is moving deeper into artificial intelligence for entertainment, unveiling plans to use AI tools to accelerate how movies and television series are developed, produced, and finished.

The initiative, known internally as Amazon MGM AI Studio, is designed to reduce production costs and shorten timelines at a moment when Hollywood budgets are under intense pressure.

The effort is being developed inside Amazon MGM Studios, with leadership from Albert Cheng, a veteran executive who oversees global original content. According to people familiar with the project, the studio operates under Jeff Bezos'longstanding “two pizza team” philosophy, meaning the group is intentionally small and fast-moving. The goal is to test whether AI can become a practical part of the filmmaking pipeline without replacing creative decision-making.

A NEW PRODUCTION MODEL

Amazon's approach centers on building a flexible AI framework rather than relying on a single vendor. The company plans to integrate tools from Amazon Web Services alongside multiple large language model providers, allowing directors and showrunners to choose the systems that best match their workflows.

Instead of focusing on scriptwriting alone, the AI Studio is targeting multiple stages of production. Early concepts include automated storyboards, faster previsualization for complex scenes, smarter editing workflows, and visual effects generation that can scale large environments without requiring full physical sets. Amazon believes this could shave weeks or even months off post-production schedules.
