SARINA WIEGMAN & ENGLAND

There has rarely been a better illustration of how success in elite sport often comes down to moments, and how players and coaches react to them, than England's Euro 2025 triumph.

Were England the best team of the year? Many would argue not, given that they lost to Belgium, Spain, France and Brazil in 2025. Even at the Euros they only won two of their seven games inside 90 minutes, and in six hours of knockout football they led for just four minutes.

But when it mattered they stood up and performed, showing a resilience that has often eluded England teams - men and women - in the past.

Much of the credit for that must go to a Dutchwoman, their coach Sarina Wiegman, whose calmness percolated onto the pitch and whose decision-making under pressure proved to be the difference time and again.

Wiegman has put together an extraordinary body of work, featuring in the dugout in the last five major finals at the European Championship and World Cup. The former her team has won on each occasion, the latter they have lost. The next step for both her and for England is to win a World Cup final, and they have Brazil 2027 firmly in their sights.
