Inconsistency was the watchword in this season's Dutch top flight - and even decided the 2024-25 title race
-
It is one thing to see one team give up a commanding lead at the top of the league, but it is rare to see two teams collapse in the same way. Yet that was the story of the Dutch title race in 2024-25, as both PSV and Ajax did their best to throw away the crown. In the end, the Eindhoven club had the last laugh, recovering from a seemingly hopeless situation to gain their 26th national title.
PSV began the season as the clear favourites. As defending champions, it was clear that they possessed the best squad, while rivals Ajax and Feyenoord had their problems.
By the winter break, all but two of PSV's 17 league games had been won and the holders were six points ahead of Ajax. There were no signs that they would collapse - but, inexplicably, that's exactly what they did. A run of just one win in seven games after Christmas saw Ajax take charge of the title race and, when the Amsterdammers won 2-0 in Eindhoven at the end of March, they had a nine-point advantage. What could possibly go wrong?
