Give players the tools to problem solve in-game

Steve Hill puts the questions to Tim Stevenson, below, the head coach at Drybrook RFC who won this season’s Regional 2 Tribute Severn (Level 6)

What is your rugby playing background?

I was involved with Celtic Warriors Academy, Scotland U18/ U19/ U21 and England Students. I also played for Hartpury University in the BUSA competition and the National Legaue team, then Cinderford and finally Drybrook as a player coach.

How and why did you get into coaching rugby and what has been your coaching journey to arrive at your current role?

I was invited by a work colleague to get involved with Drybrook in 2012 whilst I was recovering from a long term injury. I really enjoyed the environment and challenge of working with a senior team. Drybrook were very supportive of me and gave me the opportunities to develop my coaching with them.

What is your profession outside of coaching rugby?

I am a lecturer in Sport at Hartpury College and work within the rugby academy working with the ACE team and BUCS teams. Additionally this season I have gained the opportunity to work with the Gloucester Academy U18 squad.

What is your style of coaching and how has this been informed by your previous playing/coaching experiences?

I loved my experiences as a player working with some amazing coaches and I try to ensure I create an enjoyable environment as that’s what I remember the most. I like to challenge players and create opportunities to problem solve so when scenarios appear in-game they have the tools to solve them.
