THE odds of saving a penalty have been calculated at 15-20 percent – so the chances of keeping out SIX are pretty astronomical.

But that was the reality in National League South last Saturday when half-a dozen spot-kicks faced resulted in a perfect completion rate for goalkeepers.

Of those, Boreham Wood stopper Nathan Ashmore, who celebrated the week of his 35th birthday yesterday, was equal to keep out Eastbourne Borough’s George Alexander from 12 yards to help his title-chasing side to a 3-0 win.

“A good day for the keepers, eh?” laughed Ashmore when presented with the stat. “It’s just one of those days where keepers were on top.

“I don’t keep track of my own penalty-saving record but I do my research on penalty takers, which every keeper does.
