MUST PLAY - North Berwick

The East Lothian coast is home to one of the most concentrated stretches of fine links courses both ancient and modern anywhere in the world. No trip to the region is complete without a visit to North Berwick's West Links, looking out over Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth, where there's a real sense that precious little has changed over the last 190 years.

Dating back to 1832 and believed to be the 13th oldest course on the planet, this wonderfully natural links has been drawing in golfers from all over the world in ever-increasing numbers, so much so that 2023 tee times are set to prove highly elusive, if not impossible, to come by. In 2011, I wrote that the green fees were £85-£95; now they are £200, an increase way above that period's cumulative inflation of 1.44 per cent. So, what has created such demand?
