Golf fans know that Dr Alister Mackenzie was the man responsible for Augusta National; many will also be aware that the surgeon-turned-course architect first honed his design skills on his home patch close to Leeds.
Alwoodley was his first creation, but Moortown, a mere half-a-mile away, soon followed in 1909. Mackenzie had been commissioned to create a test hole in 1908 and came up with the legendary 10th, christened 'Gibraltar', a beautifully bunkered par 3 which remains one of the standout holes today.
