SICC's historic Island Course's major development is well under way with nine holes open for play.

A NEW BEGINNING

First opened in 1932, the Island Course at SICC, designed by Scottish architect Peter Robinson, cost S$80,000 to build. All who have played there will testify to its picture-perfect setting alongside Lower Peirce Reservoir, bordered by native jungle and abundant wildlife.

Heavily tree-lined fairways, rolling contours, and small greens gave it a unique place in Singapore’s golfing history, including hosting many local championships. “The Island Course was home to the first seven Singapore Opens,” recounts Douglas Ooi, a long-time SICC member." It was always a great retreat for members to enjoy... particularly to walk nine holes after work in the evenings. There was a swimming pool below the old A-frame building where kids would have their swimming lessons while their parents played a quick nine holes," Douglas adds fondly.

imageHowever, after nearly 90 years, the Island Course was beginning to show its age. Renowned course architect and five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson had helped make the course more challenging by reviewing bunker locations and an investment in agronomy practices from SICC improved playability. Yet it became clear that a more radical, long-term solution was needed. Steep slopes and native grass fairways made for less-than-ideal playing conditions—especially after tropical downpours—and for those who wished to walk 18 holes, those slopes made it a challenging trek.
