80-YARD PITCH SHOT

For the vast majority of club golfers, the main issue from this awkward shot length is distance control. Most of us can hit a wedge reasonably straight, but knocking the shot pin-high on a regular basis? That's a much tougher ask.

So in this article we will target distance control solutions for the game improver, the regular golfer and the accomplished player. As you will see, much of distance control comes down to our ability to harness flight... but strike quality is of course also pivotal. Whatever your level, focus on these twin elements to improve your performance from this range.

For the beginner or game improver, the best way forward here is to make your swing shorter and simpler. We do that by presenting a stronger or less lofted clubface to the ball... giving the shot more power and penetration. Follow this three-step pitch plan:

1. PITCH OVER LOB

So many golfers automatically reach for their most lofted wedge from short range. But of course, more loft means the need for greater clubhead speed and a longer swing. So your first job is to select your strongest wedge, usually a pitching wedge. Allowing you to cover the distance through a more compact and controllable motion, this selection gives you an immediate advantage.

2. GET LEAD-SIDED

Play the ball centrally in a narrow stance. From here, lean your upper body towards the target until your sternum is just forward (holeside) of the ball. Make sure your shoulders remain square to the ball-target line, and feel pressure grow under your lead foot. This lead-sided set-up helps you deliver a clean, squeezing strike, keeping excessive loft off the clubface.
