A FEW YEARS AGO, my wife and I along with her parents, brother and his wife-cycled down the Danube River in Europe.
It was the stuff of cycling holiday fantasy, complete with little baskets on our bikes that held just the right amount of cured meats, fresh bread, 500ml bottles of red wine and the little bottles of schnapps that friendly Austrians kept handing over.
We started in the ludicrously quaint German town of Passau, visiting Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and several smaller towns along the way. There was one comical stop in Esztergom, Hungary, where a tour guide insisted we admire the Basilica. Rather sadly for the guide, but fortuitously for us, it was right next door to a floating bar. You can guess which site was greeted with more enthusiasm by our cycling group...
