Sixth generation Computer: The future computing technology
Scientific India
|July-August 2024
We are in a transition towards a digital world, where everything will be dealt with in digital format.
-

The twentieth century has made several revolutions such as today's web, cloning, theory of relativity, transistor, laser, biotechnology and computer.
The basis for all those revolutions lies in the knowledge about atoms, cells and computers, their fast developments. In future, they will combine and do wonders in the middle of the 21st century.
That is biotechnology and computers will do wonders in future combined with quantum principle, all impossible today can become possible tomorrow. As per today's estimation humans' knowledge is doubled every 10 years, computer power every 18 months and DNA sequencing in 2 years. If this condition is continued, we cannot foresee how would be middle of the 21st century.
Depending upon human knowledge and developments computer power has also improved unexpectedly. Since the invention of the first computing machine by Jack Kilby in the year 1958 at Texas University, it has been reducing in size, and now attained in nanolevel devices as shown in figure 1. It is a wonder to know how the size is decreased while increasing density of the data. The only answer is nanotechnology, atom or molecular level devices with high-density memory, and molecular machines still can make wonders in future.
Computer generations
The basic element of a computer, the integrated circuits (ICs) made from tiny electronic components such as resistor, inductor and capacitor are functioning as heart and brain of a computer. Lots of changes are produced on the parts and size of the elements. Based on the changes and related improvements the computer improvements are classified as 5 generations. Lee.
