'Is cold nuclear fusion feasible?

In early May 1989, two chemists from the University of Utah, Pons and Fleischmann, arrived in Washington, U.S.A. The aim is to present their findings to members of the US Congress.

What's the discovery? They have been able to achieve nuclear fusion at room temperature! How? In a chemistry lab, they dipped a palladium rod wrapped in a platinum wire into a glass bowl of heavy water and sent an electric current through it, causing the water to heat up. That would be because electrolysis causes heavy water to break down into deuterium and oxygen, with some heat generated. But no, the Fleischmann's claim is elsewhere they are getting more energy than the current they are sending. They reasoned that, despite the palladium atoms forming a crystal structure, gaps exist between them where deuterium atoms can enter and combine to form helium, releasing a significant amount of energy. It's like a tabletop fusion experimental setup. They rushed this press conference because they would rather not publish this discovery in a paper and reveal it to the public.
