Union tribal ministry releases policy document on rights of communities in tiger reserves marked for relocation

ON OCTOBER 22, the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MOTA) released a policy-practice brief on "Reconciling Conservation and Community Rights: A Policy Framework for Relocation and Co-existence in India's Tiger Reserves".
This brief seeks cooperation from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), underlining that conservation efforts must uphold constitutional rights, legal protections and human dignity.
This brief is believed to be released in the context of states and gram sabhas located within tiger reserves across India raising concerns on non-implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers Act, 2006, or the Forest Rights Act (FRA). The concerns include cases where villages and forest-dwelling communities were marked for relocation or rehabilitation despite holding recognised rights to their forestland and resources under FRA.
