Resident Evil 5 took the fight against bioweapons to Africa, and it was easily the biggest console game going in April.

THE LATEST NEWS FROM APRIL 2009

Capcom's latest entry in the series was warmly received, earning 9/10 from games™, 86% from Play, 8/10 in Official Xbox 360 Magazine and 7/10 in Edge, adding to last month's scores of 5/5 from 360, 8/10 in Official PlayStation Magazine and 8/10 in X360. Directing praise at the coop gameplay, games™ described it as “Capcom's most ambitious entry into the series yet” and “an intense and relentless action experience”. Edge felt that adding a second player elevated the game from “merely good to great” but wasn't happy that there was “so much reverential reuse of ideas” from Resident Evil 4.

The top game of the month was reserved for PC owners, though. Empire: Total War had earned 94% in an exclusive review in PC Gamer last month, and this month it received 10/10 from Total PC Gaming and 9/10 each from games™ and Edge.

RAPID RELOAD

It's not Halloween, but Axel and Ruka still have to fight off the Pumpkin Heads in this early PlayStation run-and-gun. It's a clear tribute to a Mega Drive classic - does it live up to its inspiration, and can it justify the hefty price tag it now commands?
