Sony launched its Super Telephoto Zoom FE 400-800 mm f/6.3-8 G OSS lens on March 17, 2025. Designed for 35 mm full frame Sony mirrorless cameras, the lens claims to offer high-resolution performance for photographing birds, mammals, sports and landscapes, along with fast autofocus and soft bokeh.

Design & Build Quality

The Sony FE 400-800 mm f/6.3-8 lens is well built and white in colour. It uses internal zooming. The lens is moisture resistant, and the front element is fluorene coated to repel dust/water drops, that makes it easier to clean. The lens comes with a non-removable tripod collar, but the collar does not have an Arca-Swiss design for quick attachment and detachment on compatible tripod heads. Filter diameter is 105 mm, and the lens is made in China.

Key Features

The Sony FE 400-800 mm f/6.3-8 G OSS lens is constructed with 27 elements in 19 groups that include six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements for effective control of chromatic aberrations that can pose a problem with super telephoto lenses. Flare and ghosting are suppressed (using specialised lens coatings) to ensure crisp images with good contrast. An 11-bladed diaphragm helps in providing smooth bokeh.
