There are essentially three ways in which you might find yourself photographing archery as a sport. The first one is at an archery contest, with a single archer loosing shots at the target; the second is as part of a medieval reenactment; and the third is as a national festival showpiece, where archers aim to hit targets while riding on the back of a horse.

For a standard archery shot, you can either try landscape orientation to include the target or make it portrait orientation. In this case, either crop tightly to emphasise the person or open up the composition to show all of the bow. In either case, stand on the open side of the person, don't shoot from behind them.
