You could set up a chessboard and photograph it using natural light; there's nothing wrong with that approach. However, thanks to inexpensive LED lighting that offers the ability to use any colour combinations you like, without being restricted to old-fashioned gel filters, you can spice up your chessboard shots with some lighting that's a little more colourful and dramatic.
