The Mark III version of Sony’s RX100 series arrived in June 2014 at a cost of £700. At first glance, it looked similar to the previous models, with the same pocket-friendly size. But it advanced in a few key areas, notably its lens, which covered a wider 24-70mm range with a faster f/1.8-2.8 aperture. At its heart lay a 20.1MP 1in-type sensor, which worked with Sony’s Bionz X processor to deliver an ISO range of 125-25,600 and 5fps shooting. Sony also squeezed in an ingenious pop-up EVF. Other features include a 3in tilt screen, Wi-Fi, and a built-in 3EV ND filter.
What we said
- ‘The RX100 III will fit in a trouser pocket – something that not many of its competitors can boast’
- ‘The focusing speed could best be described as fast, but not snappy’
- ‘The dynamic range is very good for a camera of its size, matching that of many DSLRs’
- ‘Photographers will appreciate the EVF for bright, sunny conditions’
What to pay
It’s possible to snap up an RX100 III in excellent used condition for less than half the price of what it cost to buy new in 2014. Examples deemed to be ‘excellent’ and with their original packaging, NP-BX1 battery and USB charging cable typically range from £349 to £365. Those in good condition with more cosmetic wear cost £300-£320.
