Round Six: The Best of the Rest

The APOY judges choose their favourite images that didn't make the top ten of our Night and Low Light category

Round Six: The Best of the Rest

Jessica Miller, deputy online editor, chooses Moon-lights by Rob Reynolds, Plymouth

Sony A7 Mark III, 28-200mm at 200mm, 1/125sec at f/8, ISO 2000

Jessica says: 'Regular night photographer Rob has captured the perfect moment the moon has risen over a streetlight, transforming a familiar urban fixture into something more unusual.

'I was drawn to the minimalist but playful composition of this shot - it's a compelling example of creativity, timing and perspective. Thanks to the positioning and angle of the photographer, at first glance the moon looks like a glowing bulb perched at the top of the light, or a golf ball on a tee. The crop to square draws our attention to the story in the frame, while the evenly spaced streetlights and the centrally placed moon on the tallest light on the left, naturally encourages the viewer's eye to read the image from left to right.'

imageGeoff Harris, deputy editor, chooses Stone Guardians of the Night by Matteo Strassera, Rome, Italy

Canon EOS R5, 14mm, 120sec at f/3.5, ISO 4000

Smartphone makers take the long view

It's also been a busy year for smartphone makers, particularly in the hyper-competitive Android market. Beyond Al features, slimmer dimensions and beefed-up battery life, some cool technology came to the fore, exemplified by the Oppo Find X9 Pro. As well as being able to capture still photos at 50MP by default on all three rear cameras, a new Hasselblad Hi Res mode enables you to shoot 200MP still images. While this feature might seem overkill for a comparatively small phone sensor, it gives lots of cropping flexibility.
