THE POWER OF SAYING “TELL ME MORE”

As a parent, we know that it is essential to choose our words carefully when speaking to our children.

However, it’s not always easy! In fact, it can be really hard not to react and say things that may not be the best for our kids. Sometimes we respond on autopilot with a quick “That's nice,” a distracted nod, or a well-meaning solution offered too quickly.

Yet one of the most helpful parenting tools isn’t a long explanation or the perfect response. It's simply saying, “Tell me more.”

These three words can shift a conversation from surface-level to meaningful, from dismissal to connection. They communicate curiosity, respect and emotional safety - all essential ingredients in raising children who feel confident expressing themselves.

OPENING THE DOOR

Kids don’t always share their thoughts and feelings in neat, clear packages. They might lead with a half-finished story, a complaint that sounds minor, or an offhand comment. But often, there’s something bigger sitting underneath.

When you respond with “Tell me more,” you show your child that you're interested and that you have time to listen. You're not rushing them, correcting them or jumping to conclusions. You're opening the door and inviting them to step through at their own pace.

This small shift can turn a passing comment into a meaningful conversation and helps children feel safe to share what's really on their mind.
