PNP: Security measures in place for protest march

THE PNP on Tuesday said all security measures are in place to ensure peace and order during the Trillion Peso March protest today, Wednesday, against corruption in the government.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police force is ready to manage the expected influx of protesters during the activity, which coincides with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolt.

“Our goal is to make sure that all the planned activities will be peaceful and orderly. And this is only possible through cooperation and mutual respect,” said Nartatez.

Nartatez said the PNP has not monitored any threat to undermine the activity but said law enforcers will remain on guard to ensure peace and order.

“There are no verified intelligence reports confirming any security threat but we will not lower our guard by maintaining a high level of alertness to prevent infiltration of individuals who may intend to disrupt a peaceful assembly,” said Nartatez.

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) initially said over 14,000 policemen would be deployed across Metro Manila for the activity but later lowered the number to around 13,000.

The NCRPO went on full alert status as early as last Saturday to ensure its personnel are ready to respond to any eventuality.

Nartatez also ordered police regional offices to heighten their alert status and implement calibrated security measures in their respective areas.
