Boosting public funds

THE recent public auction by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) of three luxury vehicles confiscated from contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya marks a modest but meaningful victory for fiscal accountability and public trust.

After three unsuccessful attempts, the government was finally able to dispose of the high-end assets and generate a total of P102.5 million in revenues-funds that can now be redirected to public services and national development priorities.

Topping the list was a 2022 Bentley Bentayga, which fetched an impressive P12,178,174.15, well above its floor price of P8.88 million.

The 2024 Lincoln Navigator went to Cantinetta Espresso Concepts for P6.950 million and the 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV went to Igorot Stone Kingdom Inc. for P6.623 million.

While the numbers alone may seem insignificant in the context of the national budget, the symbolic importance of the auction cannot be overstated.

It demonstrates that the state can indeed recover value from ill-gotten or improperly imported assets, ensuring that luxury goods once associated with alleged irregularities are transformed into tangible public benefit.
