There but for the Grace of God goes that terrible wardrobe
Yorkshire Evening Post
|April 14, 2025
The old adage that it’s grim up north is not necessarily true. Particularly when you consider just how much serious crime happens on the south coast - or at least in the bit that Det Supt Roy Grace inhabits.

John Simm is back on ITV for a fifth series of Grace, as the titular downbeat detective who battles the bad guys on the south coast.
While he has good reason to look glum - his fiancée lost their baby at the end of the previous series - he’s probably heartily sick of bodies washing up under the pier.
Plus sartorially he has to compete with the ever-more flamboyant outfits of his peacocking sidekick DI Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell). Dressed to thrill in his shiny three-piece suits and blindingly colourful ties, Branson would pass for the owner of a strip club before people clocked him as a copper.
By comparison, Grace is increasingly dour both in wardrobe and demeanour, with the noteworthy exception of a pair of ludicrous sunglasses your average Roy Orbison tribute act might covet.
The first episode, Dead If You Don't, begins interestingly enough. Grace and his team must locate a bomb planted in a football stadium by an Albanian mafia group then engage in a race against time to save the life of one of the club’s major shareholders’ sons.
