Four years ago, I became entangled in what was labelled a relationship with a former England international footballer.
Then I heard a national newspaper was attempting to publish a story about me and the footballer. I dismissed it as nonsense. Surely he'd deny it. Surely there would be no story without that.
On Saturday, the phone rang. He confirmed it. He was happy for it to run.
By Sunday, it was front-page news. It was mortifying.
Here are the facts that never travelled as quickly as the scandal. I was single. I never met the man. I cancelled or declined every trip he booked. I questioned my attraction to him. He didn't dominate my thoughts or my life. To me, there was no story at all.
