Old traditions and new tricks collide at Hallowe'en

If you spot a gaggle of strangely-dressed characters wandering the streets near you tonight, fear not - they're just youngsters out celebrating Hallowe'en. Well, hopefully.

The children will be guising - the correct term for what the Americans call trick or treating, going from house to house in search of candy. Well not candy, obviously, but sweets, apples or money.

These are modern developments of course, with our cousins across the Atlantic having replaced carving turnip with pumpkins, and apple 'dooking' with chasing people with a knife while wearing an ice hockey mask.
