Creating a world class stadium – and hundreds of jobs
Yorkshire Evening Post
|January 08, 2026
The huge expansion of Leeds United's Elland Road stadium is expected to be given the green light by councillors today-with the project due to create hundreds of new jobs.
-
The club is seeking to extend the capacity of the ground from its current 37,645 to 53,000, with a planning application due to be determined by councillors today (Thursday).
Matthew Walker, principal planning officer for the council, has now formally recommended the plan is approved in a 114-page sent to councillors in advance of the meeting.
The application seeks full planning permission for the redevelopment of the West Stand (John Charles Stand) and outline planning permission for the redevelopment of the North Stand (Don Revie Stand/Kop).
The first phase of the project is due to involve the demolition and redevelopment of the West Stand, upping its existing capacity from 8,000 to 17,750.
