College cements reputation and will play key role in £100m training plan

Leeds College of Building has been named as one of the first construction technical excellence colleges - and will receive a share of £100m in Government funding to tackle construction skills shortages.

The Government yesterday revealed the locations for 10 technical colleges that will train 40,000 construction workers, as part of plans to support its pledge to build 1.5 million new homes during this Parliament.

It comes as part of the Department for Education's planned £100m investment in training workers.

Leeds College of Building will act as a hub in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and will partner with local training providers and employers to expand courses to more learners and improve training standards.

It is hoped the colleges will help tens of thousands of builders, bricklayers, electricians, carpenters and plumbers, many of whom are already in the industry, to get improved skills as ministers by 2029.
