Mayors including Sir Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham will be given the power to impose the “tourist tax” on visitors staying in their areas from 2027.

‘The Government will also propose that areas without directly elected mayors could be allowed to collect the charge, including Devon and Cornwall.

‘The tax will apply to visitors at accommodation providers including hotels, holiday lets, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses regardless of size or price.

Kevin Chamberlain, 66, owner of Wray Valley bed and breakfast on Dartmoor, said he supports the levy as long as it goes to the area it is paid for.

He said: “It all depends where it goes. If it is just a tax that goes to Government, it's just another tax. ‘They might as well put the VAT up.
