Somerset's skateboarding spirit meets creative flair in an exciting collaboration this autumn. ANDREA COWAN finds out more.

SINCE skateboarding began claiming urban spaces in the 1970s, it has shared a natural synergy with art - both channelling a rebellious spirit and challenging the norms.

This year, that energy is being harnessed in Wells, where a unique collaboration between artists, skater, and community leaders is bringing a fresh wave of creativity to the city.

Councillor Louis Agabani announced The Wells Skateboard Project as the chosen charity for his mayoral term when he was made Mayor of the City of Wells back in May. The aim of the charity is to raise £500,000 to build a new community-led skatepark. With over £185,000 already raised, the initiative is gaining momentum. But it's not just about ramps and rails - it's about culture, connection and creativity.

To help drive the fundraising effort, Louis approached Wells Art Contemporary (WAC), an international art exhibition held annually in Wells Cathedral. The idea? To invite artists to transform blank skateboard decks into works of art, merging street culture with fine art in a way that reflects the vibrancy of the local community.

Paddy O'Hagan, chair of WAC, embraced the idea wholeheartedly. "Contemporary art should push boundaries," he says. "This project brings a whole new energy and dynamism to the exhibition, and it fits seamlessly as one of our community projects that sit within the main international art and installation exhibition."

Nearly 50 artists have donated their time and talents, creating a stunning array of designs that fuse pop culture, traditional themes and street art.

Adding star power to the initiative is world-renowned skate photographer Skin Phillips, who will select 20 standout decks for display in Wells Cathedral. "It's a huge honour," says Paddy. "Skin has worked with all the greats and has had a massive influence on global skate culture. His selection will be fascinating."
