THE prospect of the blast furnaces at Scunthorpe steelworks closing prompted an emergency recall of the Westminster Parliament to sit on a Saturday.

The last time that happened was in 1982 following Argentina's invasion of the Falklands, and it is a sign of how important the situation was considered.

The UK Government lost no time in acting to save Scunthorpe, at least in the short term.

Contrast that swift response and legislative action with what happened when the future of steelmaking in Port Talbot was in the balance.

A deal was done but was it the right deal? Were other options fully explored? Where was the urgency?
