Western Mail Labour must pull up socks to win voters

THE spotlight has been on Labour this week as the first year in office is scrutinised, both at the door of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and here in Wales, where First Minister Eluned Morgan is rapidly nearing the end of her first 12 months in leading the party.

We may be in the middle of another heatwave and things are certainly hotting up in the polls, with Labour no doubt feeling the heat at the prospect of trailing behind both Plaid and Reform UK at the moment, ahead of the Senedd election in May 2026.

No longer a two-horse race politically, the looming threat of Reform is something all parties are having to wrestle with as we edge closer to another election.

Three consecutive polls have now shown Labour would come behind Reform UK and Plaid Cymru in next year’s Senedd election.
