'Welshness' is about welcoming asylum seekers, says MP
Western Mail
|October 13, 2025
BEING Welsh should be about welcoming asylum seekers, Plaid Cymru's Westminster leader has told the annual party conference.
-
In her closing speech at the event in Swansea, Liz Saville Roberts MP urged delegates to push back against “dark forces” in politics which seek to divide communities.
While asylum policy is the responsibility of the UK Government, there have been calls from Reform UK and the Conservatives in recent weeks for the Labour Welsh Government to scrap a scheme offering support for asylum seekers.
From March 2019 to March 2025, around £54,880,000 was spent on the policy, with a large proportion supporting Ukrainian refugees in Wales.
