Village plans bonfire night to remember

A COMMUNITY is taking tonight’s Guy Fawkes Night celebrations to new heights - quite literally.
> The scene in Penrhyys, Rhondda ahead of tonight's celebrations
A towering bonfire has appeared in the middle of Penrhys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, drawing attention and concern from local authorities. Residents have been busy preparing for bonfire night with plans for an “unofficial community event” featuring food, drinks, and festivities from 6pm onwards.
Streets in the area are expected to be closed from 3pm as preparations continue for what locals describe as a “community tradition”
However, the growing size of the bonfire has prompted warnings from Rhondda Cynon Taf council, which has urged residents to take caution and avoid unofficial gatherings.
A council spokesperson said: “We do not support unofficial bonfires. What might seem like fun can quickly turn into a seriously dangerous situation and anyone attending these events do so at their own risk.
“Over the years we have uncovered many dangerous items in unofficial bonfires, including tyres, mattresses and sofas, which produce toxic fumes, and even half-filled gas canisters which pose a risk of explosion.”
