Prison officer accused of threats to 'smother' an ill inmate

AN OFFICER at a controversial jail is under investigation over an allegation he threatened to "smother" an inmate.

It is alleged a nurse at Bridgend’s Princess of Wales Hospital overheard the HMP Parc employee making the comment to a prisoner who was receiving treatment after a stroke.

The Western Mail understands the prison officer was at the hospital accompanying the inmate, who was groaning in pain having suffered a stroke.

The officer is alleged to have said: “If you don't stop groaning I’m gonna smother you.”

According to a source close to the jail, a nurse reported the matter to G4S, the private security giant that runs Parc.

A spokeswoman for G4S said: “An investigation is under way and it would be inappropriate for us to comment while that is ongoing.”
