Poppy day volunteers 'threatened' over flags

VOLUNTEERS for the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal were reportedly abused while handing out poppies due to them attempting to erect the Union Flag.

Volunteer Karen Jones said she and her fellow volunteers were handing out the poppies ahead of Remembrance Day in Penarth town centre when she said they suffered abuse and faced threats if they didn't “take the poppies and the flags down”.

So taken aback by what she had heard, Ms Jones recalled the incident later, posting on social media.

“In a small, friendly town such as ours you do not expect poppy appeal volunteers to get abuse when putting up memorial lamppost poppies and flags for the remembrance period,” she said.
