New measures as threat of bird flu grows in Wales

POULTRY and captive bird keepers across Wales will be required to keep their flocks indoors from tomorrow as new measures are introduced to curb a growing threat of bird flu across the country.

The Welsh Government said the risk has risen significantly following a surge in cases among both wild and kept birds. Officials warned the disease poses a serious threat to animal welfare, food production, and public health.

Under the new rules, it will be a legal requirement for anyone keeping 50 or more birds - of any species - to house them.

Smaller flocks must also be kept indoors if their eggs or poultry products are sold or given away, because trading increases the risk of spreading the virus.

Extra biosecurity measures will be introduced for the gamebird sector.

Just last week, a lethal outbreak of bird flu was confirmed at Llyn Padarn in Llanberis following reports of a number of swan deaths.

Locals and visitors noticed an increase in the number of dead swans and geese around the lake.
