A HOLE opened up in a road two years ago, and the road has been closed ever since.

- ROBERT DALLING

Neighbours are still waiting for sinkhole fix

Close to two schools, and surrounded by houses and housing estates, it had been a busy thoroughfare. Then, overnight, all that traffic came to a grinding halt.

Now, with an end in sight for repairs, residents living there have been speaking about what life is like and what the future holds for them after so much time being shut off to the world... well, to cars at least.

It was in 2023, when a "ground collapse" was reported near a property in Dunvant Road, Killay, Swansea.

The Mining Remediation Authority determined, using historical mining data, that the collapse was due to unrecorded shallow mine workings, affecting the public footpath and the road itself.

A further excavation uncovered that the void underneath the ground collapse was larger that what was seen in the initial surface area collapse and extended further into the carriageway, leading to a road closure being put in place.

Engineers have since designed a permanent solution for the ground collapse.

Work to repair the road began on February 10, and was expected to last 16 weeks and continue until June 2 this year.
